League of Nations Activity 9/23/11

Activity 5: Look at the successes and failures of the League of Nations in the 1920s

Successes: Aaland Islands, Upper Silesia, Memel, Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria, and the Social Successes. (Also page 37 in their text)

Failures: Italy, Teschen, Vilna, Russia Poland War, Invasion of Ruhr, Albania,

In a group of three, have students do independent research on 3 examples above. Ask the students to explain for each one 1) How effective the League was and 2) why it was or was not successful. See if they can find any common factors in these studies.

Assignment 9/22

Activity 4: Review 30-32. Read 32-37. Identifies the structure/organization/membership of the league. Making a chart, list characteristics that make the league effective and ineffective. Try to have at least 10 examples! If you would like to use a website, there is one below you can peruse. Focus on the organization and not the individual cases though, as we will look at these later.
